L’Academie d’Enseignment

Professional Development for Haitian Teachers

Our Program

Rubicon is committed to making a difference in Haitian education. Our first project, #1000BookstoHaiti, focused on access to resources. In partnership with schools around the world, we have sent over 3,000 books to partner schools in Haiti.

This year, we expanded our work to include a professional development focused Teacher Academy – L’Academie d’Enseignment. During the two-day workshop, we engaged teachers and administrators from 10 schools around the region, providing them with classroom strategies and resources to enhance student learning. The workshops, delivered in Creole and French, were a great success.

Empower Teachers. Change Lives.

Why do we focus on training teachers?

Despite an increased effort by the Haitian government to address nationwide barriers to quality education, the education sector in Haiti continues to face significant challenges. Many schools in Haiti are unable to access the national curricula and align to educational standards. Compounded by the fact that the majority of public sector teachers in Haiti enter the classroom with no prior training, this lack of access precludes strong educational practices from taking root in the classroom.

According to a 2016 USAID report, 80 percent of teachers in Haiti begin teaching without any pre-service training.  With minimal government oversight, tasked with bettering the educational trajectory of students in a country where 50 percent of the adult population is illiterate, there is strong demand amongst Haitian teachers for professional development around instructional practices.

“I learned teaching techniques, how to manage a classroom, and the importance of collaboration.”

Building on the success of the 2016 Professional Development Workshop, the Foundation is looking forward to L’Academie d’Enseignment 2017.

L’Academie d’Enseignment 2017 will provide hands-on opportunities for teachers to develop, practice and apply instructional strategies for the classroom.
